Rose Sinatra – Love of creating and observing art

Rose Sinatra – Biography
.
In 1978 Rose Sinatra came to Los Angeles from New Jersey for a short vacation and because of the warm weather, soon after relocated permanently to California. In 2007 she purchased a home in New Jersey to be close to family. Rose’s goals are to split her time between the two states spending most of the cold east coast winters in California and to treat each trip in New Jersey as an art retreat. Though the time there is spent a lot with family, creating art, seeking out new subject matter and getting to know the east coast art community is a primary goal.

Rose SinatraAfter retiring from the business sector, Rose began teaching drawing and watercolor classes in the San Gabriel, Montrose, and Claremont, California.

Rose Sinatra has been an exhibitor at the Brand Library, VIVA Gallery and Watercolor West. She has won awards in the San Gabriel Fine Arts Show, the Mid Valley Arts League and Pasadena Society of Artists show. In 2009, she was awarded first place, The Skyledge Award at Transparent Watercolor Society of America.

Her art work was published in New Jersey Countryside Magazine along with plein air works from her sketchbook in the Artist’s Sketchbook magazine. Rose has an ongoing solo exhibit at Organization Resources Counselors located in Los Angeles. Rose and her students are once again invited back to show their work at the Alhambra City Hall Art Gallery for the month of March 2010.

Rose Sinatra – Artist statement
.
I am an extremely fortunate human being. I say this because of my belief that each of us is born with special gift. I’m equally fortunate that I acknowledged mine many years ago. A gift that has become a major source of my being – this gift is my unbelievable love of creating and observing art.

I share the very same passion of the artists before me – a passion to capture nature’s incredible and elusive beauty. I feel blessed that I can see the world through these eyes, although many times the result of my work is not what I see, but how I feel when painting.

Somewhere in Europe

Somewhere in Europe – Watercolor

The inspiration and challenge for this painting was a class demonstration to capture the old look of a European city. I like doodling with paint in the street foreground trying to make it look old and uneven.

.
.

2 Guys From Italy

2 Guys From Italy – Watercolor

This was painted from artist friend’s photo. My inspiration was the bored look on this guy’s face. It reminded me of my own trip to Italy where I saw different men with the same look, just sitting around thinking about …..well…who knows?

.
.

Paris Cafe

Paris Café – Watercolor

This is a painting from my one and only trip to Paris. I just loved the little narrow side streets with the outdoor cafes and the cobble stone streets. It would be nice if someone had some insight and refurbished parts of town for us regular folks to see visit without traveling so far. We could name them… Little Paris… Little Italy… Little whatever….. just give us something!

.
.

the red cloak

The Red Cloak – Oil

Several years ago, I took a photography class in black & white. My high-spirited neighbor agreed to pose for me. We went up in the foothills with her big old hat and had a great time with her posing for me. When I came across the photo again, I knew it would make a good oil painting.

.
.

Jennifer Beals

Jennifer Beals – Watercolor

After watching Jennifer Beals in the L Word series, I just had to paint her portrait. She did a spectacular job in acting as the character Bette Porter. There are a few others from the series I’m sure I will paint in the future.

.
.

Dean

Dean – Watercolor

Dean….what a sweet boy! I meet him on the beach of San Juan Capistrano. I was attending a workshop with Timothy J. Clark and one night the class went to the beach. I saw Dean with his bike and friends. I asked if I could take a photo of him. He was very natural and relaxed in front of the camera. His friends, however, were just a little to silly….trying to get into the act.

.
.

are we there yet

Are We There Yet? – Watercolor

I like hiking (but not strenuous hiking) and I even like watching people hike. I think it’s because of my connection with Mother Nature, therefore, this painting just wanted to be painted. I also like the fact that all women are in the painting, young and old, experienced and inexperienced.

.
.

Girl with Begal

Girl with Beagle – Watercolor

I went to Santa Anita Racetrack looking for photos of horses at the backstretch with a friend. His girlfriend was there with her big dog. When I sketched out the painting, I decided to change the big dog to a little beagle who I thought would look better in the painting.

.
.

Sunday picnic with mama

Sunday Picnic with Mama – Watercolor

Now this is a special painting. I had an old black and white photograph of my family having a Sunday picnic. After my parents sold their farm, they missed having somewhere to go on weekends, so they purchase a few areas of land with no dwelling on the property….just the land and a pond. That is where we drove to on weekends to get away from the city. My mother was very creative in her own way as you can see her tables were old boxes turned upside down. However, she was most gifted in the cooking department, so our picnics always had the best food anyone could ask for.

.
.

We need to talk

We Need to Talk – Watercolor

I got the idea for this painting while on paint out with an art group. There were all kinds of ducks, chickens and a rooster roaming around the grounds. The rooster however, looked like he had an attitude with the ducks or vise versa. So, I just picked each one of the critters and created a scene I thought went with their interactions with each other.

.
.

The Cove

The Cove – Watercolor

As much as I love the countryside, sometimes you just have to paint to water. California was truly one of the creator’s favorite places.

.
.

Morning mist with cows

Morning Mist with Cows – Watercolor

This was easy to paint….since I just love farms and the countryside. My parents had a farm we would visit on the weekends in New Jersey. Unfortunately, they sold it when I was sixteen. To this day, I miss the serenity I felt in the country and many times I will paint a landscape and go back there in my mind. How lucky we are as artists to travel on paper or canvas even for a little while.

.
.

Fence Posts and Trees

Fence Posts and Trees – Oil

Another countryside painting…..I just love painting landscapes. Also, I never meet a tree I did not like!

Rose’s painting have such an ethereal feeling. I love the movement that she conveys in the wash of colors. I think my favorite is “We need to talk” – Rose is right, the rooster does have an attitude!

Rose, your work is charming! The colors are vivid and alive, and draw me into the scene. “Sunday Picnic with Mama” is one of my favorites! You should look into licensing your work for publication!

Hi Deb,
Thank you for you input. You word “charming” fits how I too feel about this painting when I go back in memory of times spent there. About licensing and publication….do you know anyone??

This is the best way to wake up. The first thing I do every morning is check out this site. (while my husband makes coffee)
These paintings take your breath away. Rose is a first class artist. I agree with Deb, She needs to get licensing for some of these. Maybe all of them. They are so good.

Rose, You are really a class act. Please show us more!

I’ve never seen watercolor painted with as much feeling as they are by Rose Sinatra. Every painting tells a different story, and the inexactness of each allows you to interact with it even more. My personal favorite is “Somewhere in Europe,” this painting tells the story of passing time– nothing is eternal.

What a truly beautiful set of paintings. Thank you for sharing your gift with us Rose.

The Red Cloak was a very powerful piece that reminded me of the Lord of the Rings. It just seems like something that would belong in that type of universe. All of the paintings have a great style to them, and you can see the details even though they arn’t really their. Very amazing.

Aunt Ro,

Your work just keeps getting better and better. Each painting captures a moment in time just perfectly. They just make you pause, reflect and then fall in love and appreciate that special moment. I love your captions too. Just beautiful! Can’t wait to see more.

Rose: Your paintings are so inspiring to me. I remeber the day we met at FAF in Pasadena. Your painint style, so loose and carefree, yet warm and inviting is just the style I want to capture. Your landscapes and buildings are breathtaking. Keep up the great work.

Translation: Mrs. Sinatra is an artist with an excellent way of picturing thoughts, atmosphere, and the feel of the object in her watercolor paintings. She is especially good in interpreting facial expressions, her paintings clearly mimic the thoughts of the subject. “Guys from Italy” are not only the faces of the men who are bored, but also a grimace, covering their sharp attention to everything that’s going on around, while wearing a mask of boredom. That is also Italy and Mrs. Sinatra captured it perfectly.

What a nice way to start my day….someone adding my art on their desktop. I am so moved by the kind words that all of you have left regarding my work. Each of you has “the art of making someone feel special”….thank you all.

Aunt Rose,
Your artwork is fabulous. Both the streets of “Somewhere in Europe” and “Paris Cafe” draw the viewer into the setting. It’s as if one is about to take a jaunt to a European shop or take a seat for a delicious lunch. “The Red Cloak” is an outstanding juxtaposition of rich reds in the foreground to the background’s pastel landscape, making the work both eye-catching and powerful. Your depiction of natural light and color in all of your paintings is reminiscent of the great Impressionists – beautiful and captivating the fleeting moment.

I loved the work on the picture of roxy it struck such a chord in me the life and loyalty of our pets is what is so reassuring and reminds us the importance of unconditional love you have captured that with your skill of water paints you really brought roxy alive with the shading as he/she gazes out of the window either peering at a passerby or awaiting the arrival of his/her master to greet them at the door. What a great skill continue to bring smiles and joy to the hearts of those that are able to take a glimpse, share, or own part of your work.
