Ruth Read is my good friend. She is an award winning painter, photographer and an author (soon to be published!) of some children’s books. I always had a feeling that she would be an excellent art teacher.
Until recently, she was reluctant to do the teaching. Then one day Ruth stepped up and decided to give it a try.
She called me next day (after her first class) to tell me she loved it. So did her young students! Check it out for yourself.

Teacher: Ruth Read
Subject: Create a story book with illustrations.
What the subject should be
The students were very serious about their creations. They spent time deciding what the subject should be.
How to illustrate the story
Each child had to think about a story to tell, and how they might illustrate it.
Words and pictures
Art is sometimes telling a story with paint, and sometimes we tell the story with words.
They said they really like books with words and pictures. They learned that the pictures in the book are called illustrations.
Adding 3D effects
We worked on brush strokes for the grass and then Cory added some heavy duty 3 – D effects to it.
No mistakes
Logan learned that when we make a mistake we can paint over the mistake and fix it. There really is no mistakes.
Better than original
Joshua learned that sometimes it is better to start over, and sometimes the mistake looks better than his original idea.
Extra canvas
They all learned that they can have an extra canvas to try out brush strokes or mix color before they put it on the real painting.
The most important thing they learned is that it is fun to create.
Next class we will finish up our first illustration. Their homework is to think about what they are going to write to go with their illustrations.
We had that discussion before we started so they know the subject and wrote a few sentences.
The children all agree that this is a very fun class!
The children’s artwork is on display at the studio.
