RED
“Frozen lady” by Daemonoropsis
A stimulant, red is the hottest of the warm colors. Studies show that red can have a physical effect, increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure. The expression “seeing red” indicates anger and may stem not only from the stimulus of the color but from the natural flush (redness) of the cheeks, a physical reaction to anger, increased blood pressure, or physical exertion.
Red is power, hence the red power tie for business people and the red carpet for celebrities and VIPs. Flashing red lights denote danger or emergency. Stop signs and stop lights are red to get the drivers’ attention and alert them to the dangers of the intersection.
In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the color of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck. Red is often the color worn by brides in the East while it is the color of mourning in South Africa. In Russia the Bolsheviks used a red flag when they overthrew the Tsar, thus red became associated with communism. Many national flags use red.

PINK
While red stirs up passion and action, studies have shown that large amounts of pink can create physical weakness in people. Perhaps there is a tie-in between this physical reaction and the color’s association with the so-called “weaker” sex.
In some cultures, such as the US, pink is the color of little girls. It represents sugar and spice and everything nice. Pink for men goes in and out of style. Most people still think of pink as a feminine, delicate color.
Both red and pink denote love but while red is hot passion, pink is romantic and charming. Use pink to convey playfulness (hot pink flamingoes) and tenderness (pastel pinks). Multiple shades of pink and light purple or other pastels used together maintain the soft, delicate, and playful nature of pink. Add strength with darker shades of pinks and purple and burgundy.

YELLOW
Yellow is sunshine. It is a warm color that, like red, has conflicting symbolism. On the one hand it denotes happiness and joy but on the other hand yellow is the color of cowardice and deceit.
Yellow is one of the warm colors. Because of the high visibility of bright yellow, it is often used for hazard signs and some emergency vehicles. Yellow is cheerful.
For years yellow ribbons were worn as a sign of hope as women waited from their men to come marching home from war. Today, they are still used to welcome home loved ones. Its use for hazard signs creates an association between yellow and danger, although not quite as dangerous as red.
If someone is yellow it means they are a coward so yellow can have a negative meaning in some cultures. Yellow is for mourning in Egypt and actors of the Middle Ages wore yellow to signify the dead. Yet yellow has also represented courage (Japan), merchants (India), and peace.

GOLD
A cousin to yellow (and orange and brown) is gold. While green may be the color of money (U.S. money, that is) gold is the color of riches and extravagance. The color gold shares many of the attributes of yellow. It is a warm color that can be both bright and cheerful as well as somber and traditional.
Because gold is a precious metal, the color gold is associated with wealth and prosperity. While all that glitters is not gold, the color still suggests grandeur, and perhaps on the downside, the excesses of the rich. Add a small amount of metallic gold ink to a project for a special, rich touch. Bright gold catches the eye while darker subdued shades of gold lend richness and warmth.

The power of color
I love the explanations of colors. I pretty much use whatever color I feel like at the moment. That can change daily or by the moment. It is really hard for me to pick out a color to paint a room. I have to wait for the feel of the color. Then when I go to pick up the paint I almost always choose another color because of the feeling change.
This is very difficult for me. Only once I had to repaint a room. Not because I did not like the color, I just did not like the feel. It felt like it belonged in a desert and I was in Hawaii. Tropical. In the store it felt warm and tropical. A very nice color. It also looked good in the house, but I could not stand the feel of it once it was on the walls. Every one said I was crazy, it looked fine. Oh well. I still repainted.
So I understand that I am different. The rooms I go into have to feel good or I can’t stay in them. Color makes all the difference.
Even the color of the ceiling has to be the right color. I don’t like to paint a ceiling white. Even thought most people don’t look at the ceiling or notice the color, I still feel it, and I notice the color of peoples ceilings.
I couldn’t agree with you more, Ruth! To me it’s also all about the way a certain color makes me feel. As far back as I can remember, I was never able to pick a favorite color. I like them all!
At one point I was playing with a thought that I could easily live without black (mostly because I don’t wear black clothes) – and soon realized that the magic of the contrast would not feel as magical any longer without black…
I really enjoyed this second Colors in Nature post! Great text and images – and the best part, it made me realize that I better add some gold into one particular area of my life, where I was searching for the right color lately. Thank you, Doroteja!
Daria, That’s not hard! Just buy some real gold jewelry! You will feel fabulous! And you have added that gold!
I do wear black. And it never feels like a bad color or lack of color. I always add a lot of color. In my life I was the one that wanted color. Most of my family wanted beige carpets, cars and everything else. I really tried for a little while to do that, but I was miserable. I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a tan car.
I went back to bright colors and was happy again. I simply cannot live without color. I really felt like something was wrong because I was not like anyone else. (In the color department). I was wondering why I was not born in a place like south America or somewhere I am drawn to because I love all the color. I did not realize that I was an artist until after I was 50. Now it makes sense.
I have to look at it like this; I really stand out from my family and it is easier to influence and inspire when you already stand out as different. I live an exciting and peaceful life; people come up to me and say that I inspired them. That is nice, because I was just trying to live my life in the right feeling place and it helped them.
Color is so powerful, gentle, peaceful, and inspiring. Color can make my heart heal, and I can feel like flying. I think the worse thing in the world would be; to be without color.
Even blind people feel color. I read that color is really vibration. Now I understand why it affects us so powerfully.
Oh, I just can’t stop here… I thought that painting a black subject would be the hardest thing I could paint. So, the first painting I did was a dog with a lot of black. That same teacher that explained how to mix the color explained how to LOOK at color. There is every color of the rainbow in black. I love to paint a black subject. That is my favorite.
Ruth, maybe if you were born in S America you would never have the appreciation for color that you do now. Color really is an amazing thing and I certainly can’t imagine a world without color.
My very favorite color has been green for many years now. I believe it is the greatest healing color. To me it is also a protective color and the color of Mother Nature. My least favorite color is pink simply because there is nothing about it that I can relate to.
Anyhow, lately I’ve learned a lot about color and I love it. Writing these posts about color has also helped.
I love pink! There is not a color that I do not like. I found that when I was young I loved pink.
When I was late teens I was into peach and orange, then a few years later I couldn’t stand the autumn colors, and I was big time into red and green.
Then I noticed that when I was very sick and felt 100 years old, I didn’t care about color. As I got desperate with my sickness all the time, I decided to do something for myself that I always thought I wanted to try.
One day I had to go to a place that was next to an art studio that had classes. I made myself go in and pay for classes. I started to get better. Then after a year of pencil, I started to paint. That is when I really begin to heal. Color flooded back into my life.
I learned the word NO and I made time to go to art class. I noticed that I really liked all the colors backward. In other words as I got better over the years, my colors went back from the red to peach to orange and pink. I never did give up red. I still love red.
The older and better I feel the more I return to colors I liked when I was young. I realized this just in the last 2 years. So I am noticing that color choice has a lot to do with health.
I am going to watch my grandkids and see if that happens to them over the years. This will be interesting if I can live that long!:) I feel younger than I did when I was in my 20’s. I think Painting with all its glorious color keeps me young!
I dress myself like a grey mouse, but I like a red in my surroundings. Red is color of passion, joyfulness.
Color of fight, anger, embarrassment, blood.
Color of nature.
