The varying and vivid colors of these fish make them popular Koi pets in outdoor and decorative ponds. Koi are a type of domesticated carp, and are sometimes also called Japanese carp. These fish were developed from common carp in Japan in the early 1800′s, but carp were first bred in China for color mutations more than 1000 years ago.

Did you know that koi fish are a symbol of love and friendship in Japan, and wealth and success in China? Koi fish also play an important role in Chinese and Japanese myths and legends where they represent perseverance, strength of character, and sometimes even transform into a dragon. They are also very popular as tattoos, where they often stand for courage, achievement, and prevailing over life’s obstacles. Can you see these traits in the drawings and paintings below?

I had no idea that the Koi fish had such meaning in the culture of Japan and China. Some of the drawings show such strength like the Sumi ink and the colored pencils on blck, while the Bryan Collins water color and the ink and water color by tHe-FOrger are whimsicle and delicate looking. My girls would love those for their rooms! I’d love to see more!

Extraordinary use of colors. The matted look but with bright colors on the painted wood is exceptional.

Hard to pick a favorite as they are all so beautiful and unusual in their own way. I think that Koi are a good subject with their flowing lines and each Koi pond having it’s own character allows for so many different ways to portray them….although with the infinite colors and patterns of the Koi themselves they don’t actually “need” any background!

Thanks for the article. Koi really bring peace and tranquility to any environment. Koi are very popular because of this respect. Worldwide they bring the same feeling no matter what race or nationality. Great Paintings. Thank you for furthering the koi hobby in your own respect.
